Cure Fourways provided pro bono surgery for 10 year old Xander Vermeulen on Thursday, 30 November 2023.
In November 2020, Xander fell from a tree and suffered a severe open fracture on his left arm. Xander has been for numerous surgeries to fix the fracture and required a skin graft for the open wound. Unfortunately, the skin graft did not heal and left him with a wound and limited function of the arm.
After a long journey to recovery, Xander was left with a contracture scar on his arm. This scar has placed him in a difficult position as it is affecting the mobility of his arm.
Dr Deon Weyers, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, was contacted by CryoSave to assist with a reconstruction of the contracture scar on Xander’s arm. Dr Weyers performed a procedure where he placed an expander under the skin to expand it. Weekly expansion will be done, and once the desired expansion is reached, a free flap will be performed and Xander’s stem cells that was saved at CryoSave will be used to aid in wound healing and to assist the flap to reach its full potential.
We would like to give a special thank you to Dr Deon Weyers, Dr Giancarlo Cavedon (Anaesthetist), the Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, the wound dressings sponsorship and the Cure Fourways Team.
We would also like to thank CryoSave for all the sponsorships towards Xander’s healing process.
