Dr Andre van Straten (ENT) specialist performed the operation.
Tympanoplasty is a procedure, usually performed under general anaesthetic to correct a tympanic membrane perforation (a hole in the ear-drum).
A hole in one’s ear-drum can result from repeated ear infections or a chronic ear infection and may also lead to otorrhoea (a leaky, smelly ear), and hearing loss. The goal of the operation is to close the hole in the ear-drum and so doing create a dry ear and improve hearing. This operation was done with a microscope from a small cut behind the ear, but with new equipment we’ll be able to do the operation through the ear canal.
