Honouring Mandela’s Legacy and Inspiring Change: Nelson Mandela Month at Cure Day Hospitals

“By living out our values of Compassion, Unity, Respect, and Excellence, Cure Day Hospitals aim to make same-day surgeries accessible to all, honouring Mandela’s enduring legacy.”

From the desk of Albert de Jongh, New Business Development Manager

In honour of Nelson Mandela Month, Cure Day Hospitals is dedicated to upholding Nelson Mandela’s legacy and inspiring change through community service and support. Across South Africa, our hospitals are actively participating in community drives and supporting local non-profit organisations (NPOs). These initiatives include the distribution of school shoes to less fortunate schools across South Africa. Additionally, each hospital is collecting and distributing donated goods received from our Cure Day Hospitals employees, supporting doctors, and community members, ensuring we contribute positively to the communities we serve. Our commitment to Mandela’s vision is reflected in our efforts to create a lasting impact through compassionate care and community involvement.

A highlight of our Nelson Mandela Month activities includes a partnership with surgeons like Dr. Jeff John, who will be participating in the African Synergy Health (ASH) Mandela Week Surgical Marathon facilitated by Dr Viola Morolo, from 8 – 19 July 2024. ASH, a registered non-profit public benefit organization, addresses the backlog in providing urology procedures to thousands of patients in the public sector. Dr. Jeff John, Head of Urology at Frere Hospital, will lead an outreach in East London, where Cure Day Hospitals East London will assist roughly 24 patients over a two-week period. This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to making a difference by providing critical medical services to those in need, embodying Mandela’s spirit of service and unity.

In the Free State, Cure Day Hospitals Bloemfontein participated in an outreach project organised by Professor Freddie Claassen, Head of the Department of Urology at the University of the Free State (UFS). The project provided free surgical procedures to twelve boys from disadvantaged families who are on a waiting list for surgery to reposition undescended testes. This minimally invasive procedure was offered at no cost, with Cure Day Hospitals Bloemfontein providing free access to theatres, equipment, and medical supplies.

Through these initiatives, Cure Day Hospitals demonstrates its commitment to responsibility, making a difference, and inspiring change. By living out our values of Compassion, Unity, Respect, and Excellence, we aim to make same-day surgeries accessible to all, honouring Mandela’s enduring legacy.
