Cure Day Hospitals Bloemfontein lives out the “C” for Compassion in our Cure values and is proudly hosting and participating in a “Cataract Blitz” on Tuesday, 31 October 2023. Ophthalmologists, Prof Wayne Marais, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr Shelley Anne Barrett and Dr Niel van Wyk, Ophthalmologists based at Cure Day Hospital Bloemfontein, will offer free cataract surgeries for twenty-three qualifying individuals throughout the community, who otherwise would not have had the means to afford the procedure. Anaesthetists, Dr Marnus Booyens, from the Department of Anaesthesiology at UFS, Dr Henk van Rooyen, Dr Christo Bekker and Dr Johannes van der Westhuizen, offered their services for free. The doctors evaluated prospective cataract patients and scheduled them for their free procedure.
Cure Day Hospitals Bloemfontein have provided free access to theatres, equipment, and medical stock. Eye Pharma, Alcon and Genop, South African speciality Ophthalmology businesses, generously contributed to the collaboration by sponsoring the lenses for each procedure.
Cataract blindness is a reversible condition. Only local anaesthetic is required, and the surgery is completed relatively quickly. Patients are then discharged the same day, with a follow up visit with their Ophthalmologist soon after.
