Restoring Sound, Renewing Hope: A Life-Changing Cochlear Implant Journey

At Cure Day Hospitals Midstream, we believe that healthcare is about more than treating patients—it is about transforming lives. Through our commitment to Compassion, Unity, Respect and Excellence, we are privileged to be part of journeys that create lasting impact for individuals, families and communities.  Recently, these values came to life through a remarkable Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative that gave one young woman the opportunity to experience a world of sound in a whole new way.

Lohandi de Villiers has been waiting many years for the opportunity to receive a cochlear implant—an opportunity that would ultimately change her life forever. In appreciation to the collaboration, dedication and generosity of a team of healthcare professionals and partners who share a common vision of making a difference, that opportunity became a reality.

The life-changing procedure was performed by Dr A Smit, Specialist ENT Surgeon, with the support of Dr M Karshagen, Anaesthetist, at Cure Day Hospitals Midstream. This extraordinary day would not have been possible without the collective efforts of the AboutSound team including Sorette van Niekerk from Operation Healing Hands (OHH), Riana de Necker from the Pretoria Cochlear Implant Unit (PCIU), and former Miss South Africa, Mia le Roux, through the Mia le Roux Movement. Together, these partners united around a shared purpose: to restore not only hearing, but hope, confidence and opportunity.

For Lohandi, the cochlear implant represents far more than a medical procedure. It opens doors to improved communication, deeper connections with loved ones, greater independence and new possibilities for the future. It is a reminder that when healthcare professionals, organisations and advocates come together, the impact extends far beyond the operating theatre.

This initiative reflects the heart of Cure Day Hospitals’ CSI programme—investing in people, creating access to life-changing healthcare and making a meaningful difference where it matters most. It is through partnerships such as these that we continue to fulfil our purpose of providing exceptional care while positively impacting the communities we serve.

To everyone who contributed their expertise, time, resources and passion to make this dream a reality, thank you. Your compassion has changed a life, and your commitment reminds us that together we can create a future filled with possibility, connection and hope.
