I am Dr Sandy Koen, based in Midstream Hill medical park and have been practicing in private practice here from 2016. I have a strong passion for women’s health from puberty through to care of the post-menopausal women as a gynaecologist, I cannot stress enough how important it is for women to be proactive about their breast health. Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, and while the statistics can feel overwhelming, the good news is that early detection saves Iives.

Regular visits to your gynaecologist provide the opportunity to discuss your risk factors, learn proper self-examination techniques, and undergo clinical breast exams

One of the greatest challenges I see in my practice is that many women delay or avoid routine checkups, often because they feel healthy, have no family history of breast cancer, or believe they are too young to be at risk. Unfortunately, breast cancer does not always present with obvious symptoms in its early stages. Regular visits to your gynaecologist provide the opportunity to discuss your risk factors, learn proper self-examination techniques, and undergo clinical breast exams or referrals for mammography when appropriate.

Screening guidelines vary by age and personal risk, but generally, women over the age of 40 should have annual mammograms, while younger women should remain vigilant through self-checks and routine professional evaluations. For those with a strong family history or genetic predisposition, more frequent and earlier screenings may be recommended.
During gynaecological checkups, we not only examine breast tissue for abnormalities but also guide women on lifestyle choices that may reduce risk-such as maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, exercising regularly, and being mindful of hormone therapy use. These visits are also a safe space to raise concerns about changes you may have noticed in your breasts, no matter how small they seem.
October, being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, serves as a reminder for women to take action, but awareness should not be limited to one month. Every woman deserves the peace of mind that comes with knowing she is taking steps to safeguard her health. By prioritizing regular checkups, you are not only investing in early detection but also empowering yourself with knowledge and support.
Your health is in your hands, but you do not have to face it alone. Make that appointment, have the conversation, and let’s work together to keep you well.
