Welcome Dr Festus Iiyambula

Dr Festus Iiyambula is a distinguished Orthopaedic Surgeon, specializing in complex trauma limb lengthening and reconstruction. His academic journey commenced with the completion of his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pretoria in 2015. Dr Iiyambula’s commitment to excellence led him to pursue further education, culminating in the attainment of a Master of Medicine in Orthopaedics (MMed) from Sefako Makgatho Health Science University in 2023. Concurrently, he achieved Fellowship status with the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa.

Inspired by the problem-solving aspect of orthopaedics and its tangible positive impact on patients, Dr Iiyambula embarked on his professional journey. He began as a Phlebotomist at AMPATH Trust during medical school, progressing to an internship at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa. Subsequently, he served as a Community Service Medical Officer at Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg, marking the initiation of his focus on Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr Iiyambula’s diverse experience includes roles as a Medical Officer in Orthopaedics at Mamelodi Hospital and as an Orthopaedic Registrar at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. During this period, he actively engaged in community outreach in Limpopo, addressing the trauma and arthroplasty backlog in collaboration with the Limpopo MEC of Health and Prof. Steven Matshidze, demonstrating his commitment to improving healthcare access in underserved areas.

In July 2023, Dr Iiyambula embarked on a new chapter as a Complex Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Fellow at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology in Stellenbosch Winelands, under the guidance of his esteemed mentor, Dr Franz Birkholtz. This aligns with his overarching goal of sub-specializing in limb reconstruction, aiming to make a significant impact in this field.

Dr Iiyambula operates at both Mediclinic Midstream and Cure Day Hospital Midstream.

  1. Orthopaedic trauma management
  2. Limb reconstruction: Bow leg and knock knee correction, limb lengthening, management of malunited bones and complications following fractures management.
  3. Management of fracture related bone infection, acute and chronic osteomyelitis.
  4. Foot and ankle surgery: Bunion/ bunionette and lesser toe deformity correction, diabetic foot and charcot foot reconstruction.
