With over a decade of ophthalmology experience and a global perspective, Dr. Kriek returned to South Africa in 2023 to establish his practice at the eye care centre of excellence, Somerset Eye Centre. Dr. Kriek’s commitment to humanitarian work is evident in his five-year service in the former Transkei region in South Africa. During this time, he worked in collaboration with non-profit organizations, volunteering his spare time to perform essential eye surgeries in underserved and rural communities. Internationally he collaborated with specialists and NGO efforts in Indonesia, conducting cataract surgeries in extremely remote Indonesian islands of West
Papua. Furthermore, he applied his skills to the vast wilderness of the Canadian Arctic, participating in eye surgery outreach services to remote Inuit communities native to the region.
As a board-certified ophthalmologist/eye surgeon Dr. Kriek treats all general eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related-macular-degeneration, poor vision, and dry eye.
Additionally, as a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal disease super-specialist, he routinely manages complex cases such as retinal detachments, challenging cataracts, floaters, diabetic eye disease, intra-ocular bleeding, macular traction/pucker, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes.
