Welcome Dr Jozef Kriek

Meet Dr. Jozef Kriek, a distinguished ophthalmologist with a rich background and extensive international experience. Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Dr. Kriek hails from a lineage of physicians, instilling in him a passion for healthcare from an early age. He earned his medical degree at Stellenbosch University, where he laid the foundation for his remarkable journey in the field of ophthalmology.

Specializing in ophthalmology at the University of Cape Town, Dr. Kriek’s passion for excellence and advancing eye care led him to pursue further international sub-specialist training. He secured the coveted spot in the prestigious 2-year Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship program at world-renowned McGill University in Montréal, Canada—a campus with a history dating back to 1821 and recognized as one of the premier institutions in North America. During this immersive diagnostic and surgical training, Dr. Kriek delved into cutting-edge methods and technology, earning accolades such as McGill University’s Fellow of the
Year award in 2023.

With over a decade of ophthalmology experience and a global perspective, Dr. Kriek returned to South Africa in 2023 to establish his practice at the eye care centre of excellence, Somerset Eye Centre. Dr. Kriek is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge practices and the highest quality of surgical and clinical care to his patients. He has published original research and has given multiple international academic presentations. His international exposure, gained in Canada, Indonesia, The People’s Republic of China, and South Africa, positions him as a well-rounded and globally aware practitioner.

Dr. Kriek’s commitment to humanitarian work is evident in his five-year service in the former Transkei region in South Africa. During this time, he worked in collaboration with non-profit organizations, volunteering his spare time to perform essential eye surgeries in underserved and rural communities. Internationally he collaborated with specialists and NGO efforts in Indonesia, conducting cataract surgeries in extremely remote Indonesian islands of West
Papua. Furthermore, he applied his skills to the vast wilderness of the Canadian Arctic, participating in eye surgery outreach services to remote Inuit communities native to the region.

As a board-certified ophthalmologist/eye surgeon Dr. Kriek treats all general eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related-macular-degeneration, poor vision, and dry eye.

Additionally, as a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal disease super-specialist, he routinely manages complex cases such as retinal detachments, challenging cataracts, floaters, diabetic eye disease, intra-ocular bleeding, macular traction/pucker, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes. He specialises in advanced refractive cataract surgery and performs minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, emphasizing his commitment to delivering the highest quality care across all aspects of ophthalmology.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Kriek finds joy in family life. Supported by his wonderful wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Livi, his personal journey is enriched by their love and companionship. In his free time, Dr. Kriek indulges his passion for the outdoors, embodying a holistic approach to life that complements his dedication to providing the highest quality surgical and clinical care to his patients.
