Dr Lauren Ford is a Neurosurgeon with extensive experience, much of it working in South Africa’s busiest hospitals.
She has a particular interest in traumatic brain injuries, oncology, and spinal surgery.
She describes being a doctor as a lifelong dream and recalls being fascinated by the brain and nervous system while still at school.
After completing her bachelor’s (MBChB) degree at the University of Free State in 2011, she served a two-year internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria,followed by a year’s community service at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Then came a move to the Northern Cape and a 20-month stint as Medical Officer in Neurosurgery at Kimberly Regional Hospital, a time she describes as formative, both in cementing her choice of speciality
and the strong professional bonds formed there.
Her experience in the field deepened considerably over the following four years when she served her registrarship in Neurosurgery at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, one of the world’s
largest and busiest hospitals.
A return to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in 2020 saw her coming full circle by occupying a tenure there as Specialist Consultant Neurosurgery.
A firm believer in lifelong education and self-improvement, she has completed numerous courses in neurosurgery and related fields, contributed to several articles in leading medical journals and given multiple lectures to medical students.
She has a passion for teaching medical students and academics at the university.
