Welcome Dr Nasief van der Schyff

Dr Nasief van der Schyff is a highly experienced clinician and Specialist Physician with subspecialty training in Medical Gastroenterology. He currently practices at Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT Private Academic Hospital, where he provides a focused, sub-specialist gastroenterology service.

He completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Cape Town in 2000 and qualified as a Specialist Physician in 2009, following training in both the United Kingdom and at Stellenbosch University/Tygerberg Hospital. In 2025, he completed a three-year fellowship in Medical Gastroenterology at UCT and Groote Schuur Hospital.

Dr van der Schyff holds an MMed in Internal Medicine and an MPhil in Emergency Medicine, and is currently completing a further MPhil in Gastroenterology. He has also undertaken advanced training in clinical leadership and management, underpinning his strong track record in both clinical excellence and healthcare leadership.

He served as Head of the Department of Medicine at Victoria Hospital for over a decade and has been a Senior Lecturer at UCT since 2010. In this role, he has been actively involved in the training of undergraduate and postgraduate doctors, as well as serving as a long-standing College examiner. Over the course of his career, he has contributed to the training of thousands of medical students, interns, medical officers, and registrars.

His leadership contributions have been recognised with the Lead SA Award and the Western Cape Provincial Innovation and Leadership Award.

Dr van der Schyff’s academic and research interests include advanced therapeutic endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). He is a co-founder of the Victoria Internal Medicine Research Initiative (VIMRI) and has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications.
