Dr Petrie van der Merwe is a dually qualified Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon (MFOS) that obtained his specialist training at the University of Pretoria (UP) in 2023.
His journey started at the University of the Western Cape, where he completed his Dental degree in 2009. He was fortunate to obtain valuable and diverse experience for 3 years when he worked as a Medical Officer in the MFOS department at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein. During this period, he completed numerous courses and workshops, including a postgraduate Diploma in Oral Surgery at the University of the Western Cape in 2014.
In 2015, he started as a Medical Officer in the MFOS department at the University of Pretoria, where he was involved with postgraduate activities and undergraduate training. He was privileged to start his specialist training in 2016 where he had the opportunity to do the integrated MChD (ChirMaxFac-Med) course that included a Medical degree as part of the requirements. As UP is the only MFOS department in South Africa that provides comprehensive training in Head and Neck Oncology and Cleft Lip and Palate surgery, Dr van der Merwe is grateful to have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge in these fields among others.
In January 2024, Dr van der Merwe embarked on a new chapter in Private Practice in Somerset West where he joined hands with the respected, Dr Gerrit Wyma. His practice aims to provide technologically advanced specialist health care in a compassionate and caring environment. His areas of interest include Head and Neck Oncology, Orthognathic surgery and Implantology.
