Cure Day Hospital Foreshore welcomes Prof Howard Gluckman, an internationally renowned dental practitioner, implantologist, author, and lecturer.
With over 25 years of experience, Prof Howard Gluckman believes that great dentistry is about more than technique – it’s about respect for biology, structure, and the person behind the smile.
In addition to running a full-time private practice in Cape Town, Prof Gluckman is the co-founder and director of the Implant and Aesthetic Academy (IAA) and serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania.
After completing his dental training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1990, he spent several years in general practice before pursuing a four-year degree in Oral Medicine and Periodontics at the University of Stellenbosch. He completed this degree with Distinction (Cum Laude). Driven by a passion for advancing the profession and expanding educational opportunities, Prof Gluckman played a key role in developing the postgraduate Implantology Diploma programmes at both the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape. He later completed his PhD, awarded Summa Cum Laude, at the University of Szeged in Hungary, under the supervision of Professor Katalin Nagy.
Prof Gluckman specialises in Immediate Implant Placement and Immediate Load, Soft Tissue Aesthetics, and Periodontal Plastic Surgery. He has a particular interest in autogenous bone augmentation, especially bone harvested from the palate — a technique he published in 2015 — as well as three-dimensional bone augmentation.
He is also a recognised expert and thought leader in Partial Extraction Therapy. His expertise includes the Socket Shield technique, the Pontic Shield procedure (which he developed and published in 2016), and the Submerged Root Technique, the topic for which he achieved his PhD.
Prof Howard Gluckman has achieved numerous career milestones, including serving as Secretary of the South African Society of Periodontics (SASPIO), Past President of the South African Society for Dental Implantology, Associate of the College of Medicine and Dentistry of South Africa, and Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He serves on several professional committees, including the DentalXP Scientific Board and the Southern African Association of Osseointegration (SAAO) Board, and is a member of the editorial boards of the South African Dental Journal, the Indian Journal of Prosthodontics, and the Hungarian Journal of Dentistry.
